On September 23rd, more than 450 graduates of Canadian universities gathered in midtown Manhattan at the Roosevelt Hotel for the 18th Annual Canadian University Alumni Reception. Organized by the Canadian Association of New York (CANY), it's one of the most popular events on the calendar for Canadians in the city wanting to get together for a night of food, drinks and spending time with familiar and new faces. Amongst the universities that sponsored the event were the Province of New Brunswick, McGill, Toronto, Western, UBC, York, Queen's, Dalhousie, Ryerson, Carleton, Concordia, Alberta, Manitoba, Universite de Montreal, HEC Montreal, Ecole Polytechnique, Guelph, Carleton, University of Winnipeg and Sauder School of Business. Attendees from non-sponsoring schools are also welcome and encouraged to attend.

According to CANY Board Member Rick Kozody, who is also the organization's secretary, although the schools that are closest in proximity to New York (McGill, University of Toronto) have the highest attendance concentration at the reception, "there's good diversity with a number of schools enjoying strong turn-outs of their graduates."

In years past the reception has attracted over 500 alumni. Due to the recession of the last couple of years, the numbers have predictably gone down. With some signs of recovery on the horizon for next year, the event will hopefully see its attendance also growing.
